Growing GREEN!

March 13, 2012

We’ve got some really neat ways for your kids to ‘Grow Green’ (which could be apart of go-ing green!). As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, here’s a fun craft the family can take part in — growing Shamrock Sprouts.

How to grow Shamrock Sprouts:

Materials Needed:

small sponge for each resident

St. Patrick's Day craft - Growing Green Shamrocks

shamrock pattern

grass seeds

black sharpie marker

bowl

water

scissors

Instructions:

1. Use the marker to trace the pattern onto the sponge.

2.Cut out the shamrock shape.

3.Soak the sponge in a bowl of water.

4.Sprinkle grass seed heavily onto the sponge.

5.Place your shamrock in a bright, sunny spot, check daily and keep the sponge damp with water.

6.Look for sprouts in about 1 week.

This is a great exercise to teach children responsibility — they need to care for their sprouts by watering, making sure they get ample sunlight etc.  Just in case they fall down on the job, at least its not the family pet that will go thirsty!!  ;-)  lol

This activity can be fun for all ages!  A special thanks to Housing A Forest, who has completed this St. Patrick’s Day craft already and shared these helpful photos.

1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup Irish cream liqueur (like Bailey’s)

1/2 teaspoon salt
24 Hershey’s® Kisses® Brand milk chocolates, unwrapped

INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1:  Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.

STEP 2:  In medium bowl, beat butter and sugars with electric mixer on high speed until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla, beating until combined. Add liqueur, beating until well combined.

STEP 3:  In another medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt. Add to butter mixture, beating on low speed until dough forms.

STEP 4:  Shape dough into 1-inch balls; place on the prepared baking sheets. Press a kiss into each cookie ball, letting the dough form up around the kiss. Bake for 8 to 9 minutes or until lightly golden. Cool on the cookie sheets for a few minutes; remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

Now, go find the lucky one and demand a kiss before you give away your sweet cookie kisses!!
